The following is a history supplied by the seller; Rehab and Upgrade of the Lion In The Sun Vessel was purchased and berthed in Saugatuck, Michigan. At this time a survey and a plan for work required to facilitate a trouble free move via the water to Key West and beyond to the Caymans was initiated. The surveyor was a retired Navel Architect and a charter member of the national marine surveyors association. He had his boat docked at the same marina and was helpful as the rehab progressed. We also had the benefit of the local Chris Craft Classic company located a few blocks from the harbor. They used mahogany planks in their production of 40s and 50s CHRIS CRAFT CLASSIC runabouts.They had just finished one for Robert Redford using teak and mahogany hull, and 3M caulking. Our first contact was with the Detroit Diesel factory distributor in Holland. Their rep moved aboard for a week and replaced all hoses, clamps, filters, belts,impellors, etc. A sea trial and analysis of both the engines and transmissions was also undertaken. They said the effective life left was 90% and no further service was required. The engines are perfect, and only have 2200 hrs. This translates into a useful life left of aprox. 200,000 miles @ 15 mph average. The average diesel truck engine lasts 300,000 miles.I used 250,000-33,000 to get 217,000 miles left before overhaul. I have put 100 miles on the vessel since this work was done (see below). Our next contact was with a marine electrician out of Grand Rapids. He inspected all the wiring and installed new Deka batteries and replaced all battery cables. In additon, he installed a new 32V charger/isolator and a new 12 V. charger. A new water cooler pump was installed on the central airconditioning system. Misc work was done to secure wiring and a new 32V alternator was installed along with new fuse blocks. The Kohlar Lite Plant was serviced and hoses,belts, and impellor were installed. Effective life of this engine was also fixed at 90%. New bilge pumps and water alarms were also installed. A remote searchlight was installed. The teak decking had just been replaced (along with the subdeck )by the previous owner. A decision was made to professionally seal this with epoxy and top with a Non Skid coating. With a fibreglass cabin, this step was a logical one towards getting the Lion ready for tropical conditions.The hullk was stripped and one cracked plank was replaced. The interior was in excellant condition, but the Chris Craft brown stain was unattractive. Inasmuch as the entire vessel was mahogany, it was decided that stripping and varnishing this was our next project. At this time we also renovated the two heads and installed toilets, fixtures, new carpet, etc.. The Lion had never had holding tanks installed. We put in two tanks and all the plumbing. making each head independant- in keeping with the philosophy that also separates the fuel tanks, engines, transmissions, and props. Any failure in one engine or system would not interrupt a trip to the next port or beyond. She is capable of cruising to Fla.on 1 engine(or 1 toilet),if necessary.The fresh water is even split into 2 tanks. The pilot house/bar area was refinished,and is unmatched as an entertainment center that is elevated above the other boats in the harbor. An ice maker, brass sink, ref, and stereo/buffet were added, plus a large Dutch oil anchorlamp. We also have a set of new clear vinyl & SUNBRELLA canvas curtains for the pilot house. With a certified passenger weight spec of 4850 lbs, these Connies make a ideal cruise ship. As a floating condo, the extended pilot house and bar offerroom that most currently designed 52 ft yachts do not have. Central air conditioning with individual cabin controls, along with separate heating controls, are typical of the Chris Craft engineering that is throughout the vessel. From the engine room to the Fly Bridge, the Chris Craft fit & finish is evident throughtout. All doors, drawers, etc. operate as new. With 4 closets, a dozen drawers, full size refr/freezer, and room for a full size washer and dryer, she offers the comfort and spaciousness of modern day million dollar yachts at a fraction of the cost-with no annual depreciation.
